Many trials ask whether an intervention changes performance. CPET answers this with objective, reproducible measured values and also shows the mechanism through which the change comes about.
CPET captures breathing, circulation and muscle metabolism as one connected chain under exercise. Trials on performance thus measure the function of the overall system instead of a single organ at rest.
Peak V̇O₂ and the ventilatory thresholds are objective endpoints and respond sensitively to interventions. Submaximal parameters remain robust even when test subjects do not reach maximal exertion.
Many tests show whether performance has improved. The breath gas pattern additionally shows whether the change is cardiocirculatory, ventilatory or peripheral in origin, making the mechanism of an intervention tangible.
The method is standardized, and reference values and analysis conventions are established. Results can therefore be compared with the published literature and pooled across centers.
