CPET in Preventive Medicine

Prevention starts with a baseline assessment. CPET measures cardiopulmonary performance in healthy individuals long before findings at rest become conspicuous, and makes changes comparable over years.

Questions

  • 01

    Classify performance objectively

Maximum oxygen uptake puts individual exercise capacity in relation to reference values by age and sex. Preventive medicine counseling builds on this baseline value.

  • 02

    Attribute the limitation

The breath gas pattern during exercise shows whether reduced exercise capacity has a cardiocirculatory, ventilatory or peripheral cause. Training status can also be examined as a cause.

  • 03

Measure resting metabolic rate instead of estimating it

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is measured via breath gas analysis with a mask instead of being estimated from formulas. Nutrition counseling and weight management build on the measured value.

  • 04

    Document progress over time

Trend views place measurements side by side and make changes visible over years.

Parameters

Peak V̇O₂
Highest oxygen uptake measured during the exercise test, absolute or relative to body weight.
W max
Highest power in watts reached in a step or ramp protocol.
VT1
First ventilatory threshold: from this point, CO₂ output rises disproportionately to oxygen uptake.
Resting metabolic rate
Energy expenditure at physical rest, measured via breath gas analysis with a mask.
Substrate utilization
Share of carbohydrates and fats in energy expenditure, calculated from the respiratory quotient.

What our users say

"In more than 18 years of use in sports and preventive medicine and more than 15,000 tests, we have not had to send a single patient home dissatisfied. Our two CORTEX testing stations run extremely reliably, keep data secure and have never crashed. The software for running and analyzing tests is excellent for both medical and exercise science use. With features such as oxygen kinetics (oxygen delay), ExcessCO2 and cutting out lactate sampling windows, it offers many capabilities no one else has, and they make possible a quality of reporting in sports medicine performance diagnostics that is second to none."

Dr. phil. Andreas Greiwing, Dr. med. Ralph Schomaker

ZfS Münster

"As an institute for hypoxic and altitude training, we use CORTEX CPET systems to make the effect of altitude training clearly measurable. With precise data on VO₂, ventilation and metabolic thresholds, we can show our athletes and patients the progress they are making. Thanks to the reliable measurement technology, the clear analysis and the simple handling, both our staff and our clients are always very satisfied with the system."

Natalie Dukart

AltiMed

"The CORTEX systems win us over with their ease of use and their reliability in everyday diagnostics. We are also very happy with the fast and knowledgeable support."
