CPET in Pulmonology

Resting spirometry shows breathing mechanics. CPET shows whether they actually limit performance under exercise, and from which point.

Questions

  • 01

    Separate ventilatory from cardiocirculatory limitation

Breathing reserve, breathing pattern and gas exchange under exercise show which system limits first. The examination thus attributes exercise symptoms to a cause that the resting value alone does not explain.

  • 02

Breathing mechanics at rest and under load

Defined breathing maneuvers such as VC, FVC and MVV capture breathing mechanics at rest. The subsequent exercise measurement shows whether, and from which point, they actually limit performance. Flow-volume loops under exercise, overlaid on the maximum loop from the resting measurement, show Breath-by-Breath whether breathing shifts into dynamic hyperinflation.

  • 03

    Detect desaturation under exercise

A falling oxygen saturation often only shows under load. Continuous SpO2 measurement across the entire exercise period attributes it to the intensity at which it occurs.

  • 04

    Monitoring therapy over time

Repeated measurements with the same methodology show whether a treatment has changed performance. Trend views place the measurements directly side by side.

Parameters

VE
Minute ventilation: the volume inhaled and exhaled per minute.
Breathing reserve
Difference between minute ventilation during exercise and the maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV).
V̇E/MVV
Minute ventilation during exercise relative to the maximum voluntary ventilation.
VT1
First ventilatory threshold: from this point, CO₂ output rises disproportionately to oxygen uptake.
SpO2
Peripheral oxygen saturation, recorded by pulse oximetry over the course of exercise.
Flow-volume loop
Plot of airflow against volume from the spirometric maneuvers.

Testimonials

What our users say

"In more than 18 years of use in sports and preventive medicine and more than 15,000 tests, we have not had to send a single patient home dissatisfied. Our two CORTEX testing stations run extremely reliably, keep data secure and have never crashed. The software for running and analyzing tests is excellent for both medical and exercise science use. With features such as oxygen kinetics (oxygen delay), ExcessCO2 and cutting out lactate sampling windows, it offers many capabilities no one else has, and they make possible a quality of reporting in sports medicine performance diagnostics that is second to none."

"As an institute for hypoxic and altitude training, we use CORTEX CPET systems to make the effect of altitude training clearly measurable. With precise data on VO₂, ventilation and metabolic thresholds, we can show our athletes and patients the progress they are making. Thanks to the reliable measurement technology, the clear analysis and the simple handling, both our staff and our clients are always very satisfied with the system."
